The Challenge We Address
In Uganda, children with disabilities are among the most marginalised groups. Key challenges include:
- Limited access to early identification and rehabilitation services
- High levels of stigma and discrimination within families and communities
- Poverty among caregivers, limiting their ability to support therapy and schooling
- Inadequate inclusive education facilities and trained teachers
- Weak social protection systems for families with children with disabilities
These challenges reinforce each other. A child who does not receive therapy may not access school. A caregiver without income cannot prioritise rehabilitation. A community that lacks awareness may exclude both the child and the family.
SCSP addresses these interconnected challenges through an integrated support model.
The Approach: A Holistic Family Support Model
SCSP works on the understanding that supporting a child with a disability requires supporting the entire family and surrounding community. Our approach integrates:
- Rehabilitation and early intervention
- Inclusive education
- Caregiver economic empowerment
- Awareness, advocacy and community engagement
This model ensures that progress made in one area is reinforced in others, leading to sustainable outcomes for children and families.
Urgent Need: To Complete a permanent multi-purpose centre for rehabilitation, inclusive education and caregiver training.
Current funding need: USD 25,000 to complete the ground floor and equip key service areas.
This investment will:
- Increase the number of children served
- Improve quality and consistency of services
- Provide a safe and accessible learning and therapy environment
